「盡国家之秋在焉 (国家ニ盡スノトキナリ)」

この力強い筆跡は、わずか27歳で世を去った幕末の風雲児、高杉晋作が、松田屋の楓の幹に刻んだものです。

松下村塾で吉田松陰から「将来、人の上に立つ人材」と称された晋作は、日本の未来が定まらない激動のさなか、討幕の密議をこの湯宿で重ねていました。

「盡国家之秋在焉 (国家ニ盡スノトキナリ)」
This powerful inscription was carved into the trunk of a maple tree by Takasugi Shinsaku, the visionary young samurai who passed away at just 27.

A highly regarded student of the Yoshida Shoin academy, Takasugi used this very inn as a clandestine meeting place to plot the overthrow of the Shogunate during the turbulent end of the Edo period.

Filled with patriotic fervor, Takasugi must have felt an intense urgency and resolve. This single, profound line embodies his wholehearted commitment to the future of his nation:

"There is no time for hesitation. Now is the moment for us to dedicate our lives to the country."
